WORKS IN PROGRESS
By JOHN NEWMAN
Peyote Moon
is the first of several additional fully conceived novels that are based
on the Sam Comstock character and this novel’s theme: the sustaining
power of nature and love in the face of cataclysm. The stories can be
categorized as mainstream eco-ethnic thrillers, with cross-over elements
of personal transformation and magic realism. They
are set in the West, and focus on a hard-luck game warden who teams
up with a variety of Native American professionals, shamans, peyotists,
and blood-crazed warriors to confront the great demons of our times.
The novels in development are:
Buffalo Dreamers, a contemporary eco-ethnic thriller about
a herd of enchanted Yellowstone Buffalo rescued from a government
extermination program. The rescue is carried out by a band of Native
American and White warrior-dreamers, who wage a wilderness battle
across five states against the combined forces of the police, military,
and the cattle industry.
Predatory Instinct, about a wilderness big-game hunt that
leads to pursuit by a bloodthirsty band of human body-parts poachers.
The Ghost of Ishi, about the haunting presence of the last
wild Indian – Ishi – in his native habitat along Deer
Creek in northern California, which builds to a modern case of genocide.
The Sea of La Mancha, a novel about the harsh consequences
of a man who pursues his dream of fishing for tuna off the Pacific
coast.
